If your female dog is not spayed, you are probably dealing with some messy issues during her heat cycles.
Introducing: A great piece of dog apparel to handle the messy side of a dog’s heat:
The Dog Heat Suit
Originally invented for dogs after surgery, this suit also aids in treatment of skin conditions, covers wounds for better healing, aids light incontinence problems and is great for dogs in heat.
People often use doggie diapers during a dog’s heat cycle. I have been using one in the past for Mila either.
However, you probably know the following challenges: The diapers getting fixed around her hips, do not only cause Mila discomfort. She obviously just does not like the feeling of the diaper around her hips. As a result of her trying to get rid of that thing by rubbing against walls, curtains and chairs, not only is the house always a mess during this time. The diaper also becomes leaky every now and then, leaving spot on the floors and the couch.
Disadvantages of dog diapers
Also it is not easy to place some absorbing padding inside the diaper, because the back part of the diaper it is loose and sits far away from the “action”. Once the diaper shifts, it becomes completely useless and leaky.
It is always a struggle to place it around Mila’s hips without it being either loose enough to shift OR too tight around her hips cutting into her belly.
Just before I was about to engage my own sewing machine, because I could no longer stand watching Mila being unhappy with her leaky diaper, I found the solution right around the corner when I looked for suits instead of diapers for a change on Amazon: The Dog Heat Suit.
Advantages of the dog heat suit
This suit is tailored to fit like a romper for toddlers without sleeves or pant legs. It has a very good closure at the back and snap-fasteners. It is available in different colors/ designs. I chose black for obvious reasons.
The stitching and material are of very good quality. The suit is originally designed fr dogs who had surgery.
But it also does a brilliant job in mess control during a dog’s heat.
If your dog is already familiar with wearing apparel and tolerates it, she will probably tolerate this suit as well.
If not, you can get her used to wearing the suit by purchasing it when she is not yet in her heat and practicing. First just a few minutes, treats and praise, then for longer periods until she does no longer bother with the fabric around her body.
Caution is advised when your dog is left alone wearing the suit. Some owners have reported their dogs trying to remove it. That’s also subject to training OR if you keep her in a box, for example, when you are not at home or during the night, she can sleep without the suit in her box.
The material is a four-way-stretch fabric made of cotton and a bit of Lycra. Thus the material has “give” to adjust to the body. Cotton also does not promote heat accumulation, which is good during the warmer months (although I would probably not let my dog wear it during the summer heat in non-air-conditioned areas).
